I've found a new hobby: Library Thing. It was mentioned on a Buffy fan board I frequent (mostly in lurker mode). It is so cool. You can catalog your books and share your library with people. I promise to share mine (and Icepick's because I'm not about to try to separate our books) as soon as I have it done.
In the meantime, maybe you'll want to give it a try. I'll be back when (if) I'm done.
Update: Nowhere near done, but I have catalogued just over 300 books (four small sets of shelves) so far. I still have nine or ten sets of (larger) shelves to go. This project is way more fun than cleaning house or organizing paperwork. You can see our list here.

We're now up to 668 books. That leaves two large book cases, two moderate bookcases, a small bookcase, and at least four boxes of books. And I'm sure we have various miscellaneous piles of books here and there.
The total may not seem like much, but we haven't booked many of the paperbacks yet. Mostly it has been large hard-cover volumes, some of which include multiple novels.
Final tally for the weekend: 801 books catalogued. It looks like we will probably finish around 1400 books, before getting to the four boxes. Honestly, that surprises me because I thought we would have had many more than that....
Interesting. Does it give you any sort of sorting capabilities? I'll probably make 2 lists and keep all the cookbooks by themselves.
When y'all get a spare moment, could you find a similar service for albums? I'd really like to find a simple way to catalogue all my vinyl and have it fill in the individual tracks for me. I'll wait.
You can tag your books (I'm in the process of doing that now), and it will sort by tags. There is also a "tag cloud" feature. I have my cookbooks listed with the rest of our books, but I found it a little frustrating that I can't always identify which edition I have from their list. I either have go choose the closest thing they have or manually enter it.
I'll look for a music cataloguing service if you'll let me know when you find one for DVDs and/or magazines.
I am way, way, way, way, way too scared to even think about cataloguing the books in our house.
But I admire you all immensely for doing so--sincerely.
Hi Reader. I swear if you get started cataloguing, you can get completely addicted. It's a combined rush of feeling like I'm accomplishing something and getting to say hello to old friends that I had forgotten existed. We're currently up to 916 catalogued. I'd like to finish this weekend, but that probably won't happen. We still have at least 3-1/2 sets of shelves to go through, plus our boxes. We'll see.
Just for the heck of it, I started counting the cookbooks/food-related books in our kitchen bookshelves in the back hallway, but stopped at 95, on account of feeling faint.
I mean, what the hell? I think I'm going to open a cooking school someday? Become a food writer?
Ridiculous.
I need to clean out my life, it's clear.
Sigh.
I need to clean out my life, it's clear.
Then it's a good thing you guys are moving this summer?
